TAKING A SIP OF HER tepid tea, Suzanne set the mug down on the small table next to her. By now, most of the swelling had gone down in her foot, although it still pained her to put too much pressure on it. As long as she took very small steps, she could get around much better than before. In any other situation, she would be happy to be on her way to recovery. But in her current predicament, she was too melancholy to celebrate. After all, she assumed Andrew would simply have her moved back into the jail. She turned to her left, grateful for the chair Felicity had given her near the window. It allowed her to look out on the town below, allaying some of the immense boredom she experienced from being cooped up in the ward.

Her seat at the second-floor window gave her a good view of the eastern end of Main Street. She could see people moving up and down the walk, attending to their afternoon business. A dark figure cut through the crowd, meandering a winding path toward the clinic. It was Yardley. Her gait gave her away, even though her face was all but hidden beneath a wide brimmed straw hat. Suzanne sat back in the chair and waited for her legal representative to appear.

Yardley entered the doorway, her aged face and blue day dress streaked with what looked like soot. For a moment, Suzanne eyed her, trying to figure out how she’d gotten so be-spoiled. Then realization hit. “I suppose you’ve been down to the remains of the cafe?”

Yardley gave her a crooked smile. “You suppose right. I went down there to gather evidence to build your case.”

She shifted in the chair, watching as Yardley eased down onto the edge of the bed. “I surely appreciate it, but are you all right? You’ve got ash all over you.”

Whipping out a handkerchief from her bosom, the old woman cleaned her streaked face. “Aw, it’s nothing. Just doing my duty. The other fool folks around here may think you’re guilty, but I know you didn’t do it, and I intend to help you prove it.”

That brought a smile to her heart and her face. She could count the allies she had in this town on one hand, and Yardley was certainly among them. “Did you find anything?”

“Sure did.” Yardley reached into her skirt pocket and pulled out something. It was a small pad of paper, on which the older woman had made a simple line sketch. The sketch looked as if it had been drawn in a hurry but showed a surprising level of skill on Yardley’s part.

Her mind quickly registered the shape of the object depicted in the drawing. “It’s a key.”

Yardley nodded excitedly. “It’s not just any old key. It’s a brooch, which makes it a real good clue. Pretty good size, too—about two inches long.”

She could see the detail of the brooch in the drawing. It was encrusted with crystals and pearls and had a very ornate top.
